About Steven Hammond
WRSD School Committee

I am wrapping up my first term on the Wachusett Regional School Committee, and I am running for a second term. I have worked hard for the district and I feel that I have had a very successful first term. Obviously attendance is key to understanding the issues facing the district and participating in moving the district forward. In my three years on the committee I have only missed two meetings of the full committee, and only one meeting of a subcommittee I was assigned to.
Leadership on the committee is important to a town's representation in the district. My active participation allowed me to take on leadership roles on the committee during my second year. It was during this year that I served as the vice-chair of the Education Subcommittee and the vice-chair of the ad hoc subcommittee to review the Regional Agreement. During my third year on the committee, I served as the Chair of the ad hoc subcommittee looking at academic disparities across the district and continued to serve as the vice-chair of the Education Subcommittee.

Astronomy
There are so many possible experiences in Amateur Astronomy, that it is hard to know where to begin to describe it. The obvious is the use of telescopes to observe the night sky, but there is so much more.
- Some people make their own telescopes
- You can use your telescope to participate in real science
- Amateur radio astronomy is picking up
- Armchair astronomy by reading magazines, book and watching astronomy videos
However, I think outreach and education are the most exciting aspects of Amateur Astronomy for me. I am a member of the Aldrich Astronomical Society. We won an "Out of this World" award from Astronomy Magazine in 2007 for our outreach program.
I am also a volunteer educator for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As a Solar System Ambassador I go to classrooms, scout groups, museums, etc. to teach people about space and space exploration. You can find educational materials on my downloads page.
